Unlock The Fretboard With 5 Chords!
Hi, Mark here!
If you're here, it's likely you've heard about the CAGED System as a way to explore the fretboard...
Maybe you've seen it mentioned on YouTube or in some forum...
Maybe you've seen one of my videos somewhere and ended up here...
If that's the case and you're trying to find a way to understand it, then I'd love to tell you about this mini-course I've put together for you.
It will help you find your way around the fretboard, so you can play anywhere with confidence!
Whether you just want to:
Jam along to backing tracks at home...
Play in a band...
Play on stage at open mic nights...
Understanding this is a game changer.
One of the first hurdles for any guitarist is getting familiar with the fretboard.
Most of us learn a few chords, then maybe a pentatonic scale and a couple of root notes.
We start sounding"ok" as players but we wanna sound better, right!?
That's usually when the bug sets in...
We start to explore the neck and try stuff in different places but, if you're anything like I was when I first started, it doesn't take long to get lost!
My lack of knowledge around the fretboard was a real frustration.
I would try something - maybe a lick or riff I'd managed to figure out - but then, realise I was well out of my comfort zone.
After playing whatever idea it was, I'd then be "stuck" wherever I'd ended up!
Looking back now, it seems so clear and obvious.
It's easy to pick out where chord shapes are and the surrounding scales and other patterns...
But back then, every note looked the same!
And as you know, there's very little to tell you where you are, despite the block inlays or dots on the side of the neck!
Once you see these obvious patterns and how they link up, it's like that light at the end of that tunnel!
Two things made a huge difference for me.
One was seeing the way the root notes worked and the fact there is only one pattern - MIND BLOWN!
The other was seeing the way these 5 chord shapes overlapped to create the system.
I call this the jigsaw and once you see how this fits - BOOM!
And I'm sure this will be the same for you...
Very quickly, after getting to grips with the basics, you'll be able to identify what root notes or chord shapes are where and how you can use them.
You see, the CAGED system is like a map.
And once you can read this map you'll literally be able to "see" the fretboard.
Have you seen The Matrix?
You know the scene near the end, when instead of seeing "things" Neo just sees the code everywhere..?
That's kind of what it's like when you understand the CAGED System.
It works over positions which are based on those 5 chord shapes that give the system its name.
And no doubt you are already very familiar with these!
Knowing these patterns will give you confidence to explore the neck and reach those playing goals you have!
This can really help you overcome the frustration I know many guitarists share: Being able to move about the fretboard freely and not feel lost!
Whether you are looking to play leads and solos...
Or you're looking for new ways to write your own songs...
Once you know this system you can't unsee it and the whole fretboard falls into place.
Every key becomes available to you - as well as every chord in every position.
And once you start to see the guitar like that... there will be no stopping you!
