Hey Fellow Guitarist - Let me tell you a quick story!!
It's about my buddy Phil: True story - Real person...
It was a dark and windy November evening on the Costa del Sol in Southern Spain, 2007... Phil and I had driven north for about 50 minutes along the coast road, heading to Sal’s bar, Fuengirola.
Every Thursday Sal's had a jam and open mic night. People came from all over the area to play and have some unrehearsed fun, with many coming just to watch.
I had only just moved to Spain in late 2007 but Phil had lived there since 2000 - We met there in 2003, when he was my Instructor on a Boating Course.
We quickly discovered we had a mutual love of the guitar, thanks to finding an old acoustic on the training boat (a Spanish guitar of course!)
There was one difference though: Phil had literally only just started playing. I'd been playing for over two decades by then.
Back to that night in Sal's Bar where, during these four years, Phil and I had become firm pals, with me showing him as much guitar stuff as possible on Skype or during visits.
He had become a fairly reasonable player in that short time too… But there was one tiny thing:
Phil could not improvise.
He was figuring out all sorts of cool licks from Eric Clapton and Eagles songs thanks to TABs and other friends who played and he was like a sponge, soaking up all the ideas and going to work on them.
He could play parts from many of the solos from these and other blues rock artists, like Fleetwood Mac, Santana and so on… but at this stage, he just couldn’t improvise or develop ideas off his own back.
So that night there we were, in Sal’s bar, Fuengirola… People jumping on and off stage forming "new bands" every other song and having a great time jamming...
I remember, from a spectators viewpoint, Phil was obviously mesmerised by the different players and we were having fun, chatting and enjoying what the other players were doing.
Bearing in mind I'd already been playing for about 27 years at this point, with many years of gigging and teaching under my belt, I felt happy enough to join in and jam out some bluesy stuff with other musos.
And then, someone motioned for Phil to get up and have a go...
It was his turn now…
He laughed nervously and kind of shrugged, holding his hands up like “ah no, it’s fine, next time...”
People were asking him: "Do you play - are you going to get up and do a song?" "Ahh - a little - er maybe next time" he replied sheepishly, still laughing it off.
But... I could see the frustration in his eyes; he so desperately wanted to get up and have a go but he was also intimidated by the thought of not knowing what to play or worse, just getting up onstage and looking stupid.
His face showed the exasperation and frustration of wanting to get up and have a go but, deep down, his lack of confidence was holding him back.
It was such a shame because ability wise, he would have been able to join in but sadly, his lack of confidence in himself and in not knowing what to play, stopped him.
He could have even just played a few of the Clapton riffs and ideas he knew, once he knew what key they were playing in and they would have sounded great!
Maybe you’ve been in the same position?
Maybe this is something you’re looking to conquer in your own playing..?
Many guitarists feel this way – decent players, who I know can happily play along to stuff they’ve worked out and jam along with at home: In that situation they are well within their comfort zone but, the thought of improvising something can feel a big stretch without feeling confident in where and what to play.
If you recognise yourself in any of this and finally want to banish that lack of confidence and knowledge once and for all, then I can help you with that!
I'll help you put that all behind you for good!
So let me ask you... Have you been wishing you could play guitar solos, jam along with friends or your favourite backing tracks?
Do you feel excited about jumping up onstage at your next local Jam Night and having some fun with a band? Or do you feel like my buddy Phil did back then - intimidated by the prospect?
If you've already seen videos about this system elsewhere - YouTube, Facebook etc - or any of my videos, then you'll know there is a way to unlock the fretboard that will give total playing freedom - and it's not as complicated as it may seem at first.
It helps of course, if there is a "map" to guide you, show you the way round and help you unlock the mystery shall we say... And, that's exactly what this course gives you:
In this CAGED SYSTEM Course, you'll find:
Over 2 hours of videos, all broken down into bite-sized, easy to follow sections
Explainer PDFs with charts and diagrams
Full Scale TABS
1st-Class, High Quality Backing tracks to jam along to...
In this course and with these videos, I'll show you how to identify the patterns in any key and show you where and how you can build up your knowledge.
Whether you are figuring out the stuff your favourite players play, or want to start writing and improvising, you'll find just what you need here, so you too, can begin to play with full confidence.
Once you know and understand these patterns, it wont be long before you'll feel confident enough to join in with any other musicians - and you won't be left feeling out of your depth or even embarrassed!
THERE'S NO TIME LIMIT!
What's more, you can go through all the videos at your own pace and with the included backing tracks, you can start to implement what you're learning. You can build up your level of knowledge at your own speed and watch the videos over as often as you like.
I'll also be adding more to the course over time. Thanks to feedback from people like you, I can make sure this course really delivers and helps you take your playing forward.
Inside, there are links to the private Facebook Group, so you can contact me and keep in touch. You can even show everyone how you're doing - if you want!
And what of Phil, you may be wondering..?
Well, I'm happy to report, he's still playing and since those days has been in a few bands, doing party style gigs, bar gigs and so on.
He's even the lead guitarist now in a function band that does a few events here and there and loving every minute of it, playing solo parts and full off confidence!
So... Don't let your confidence get the better of you! If you've ever wanted to get up and jam at an open mic night or even just feel like you want to noodle at home, now is the time to get stuck in.
Play with authority and with confidence - PLAY GUITAR: HAVE FUN!
I hope to see you in the course!
Cheers and all the best for now,
Mark
